Retired & Senior Volunteer Program

The Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is part of the Corporation for National Service which identifies community needs and addresses them with senior citizen volunteers. The program utilizes their vast knowledge of skills and lifelong experiences, while at the same time fulfills their personal interests. Volunteers are ages 55 and older and serve from a few hours to over 40 hours a week in organizations that range from hospitals and educational facilities, to food banks and senior centers.

Senior Companions

The Senior Companion Program, also associated with the Corporation for National Service, recruits volunteers to act as companions to home-bound elderly. Companions who meet the low-income requirements receive a stipend in exchange for a 20 hour work week. Reading, visiting, and making a difference in the day of a home-bound senior is the goal of the Senior Companion volunteer. The Senior Companion Program is managed through Panhandle Home Health, contracting with the Area Agency on Aging to provide respite services for caregivers.

Literacy and Tutoring

RSVP's reading program is an intergenerational tutoring program that addresses the need for every child to be able to read well and independently by the end of the 3rd grade.

Long Term Care Ombudsman Program

Long Term Care Ombudsmen are advocates for residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities.  They work to resolve problems of individual residents and bring about positive changes.  Trained volunteer ombudsmen regularly visit facilities, monitor conditions and care, and provide a voice for those unable to speak for themselves.  Created in 1972 as a demonstration program, the Ombudsman Program is currently established in all states under the Older Americans Act, which is administered by the Administration on Aging (AoA).

The VISTA Connection:

The VISTA is responsible for establishing an ongoing training program based on resources from the National Long-Term Care Ombudsman Resource Center, recruiting and training volunteer assistant ombudsman, and managing the program.
